First and foremost, you have to understand that some chickens are better “egg layers” while other chickens are better as “meat birds.”

It’s not unusual for farmers to raise 100 or more meat chickens at a time on their own. Commercial farms have thousands of chickens in them.
A lot of people also will only raise meat chickens during the summer so that they can use temporary tarps to provide shelter from rain and wind. These chickens do not need roosts since they won’t really use them. They are bred in a way that they mostly eat and sleep. They do need room to move around though and you can also provide them with a run to let them outdoors.

In most cases, you will but meat chickens as day-old chicks so they will need special care until they are a bit older. Chicks need a brooding area that is well heated. Their bodies will get large, and it becomes difficult for them to stand for long periods. You should also make sure they have well-shaded areas so that they can relax. If you let them run free-range, then be sure you keep feed and water in the coop as well as in the field. Meat chickens are not going to move very far.

How to Butcher Chickens at Home
This section is going to walk you through the process of butchering your own chickens for meat. There are some specific rules that you have to follow to do this in the most humane way possible.
Step-By-Step Look at Processing Chickens:
- Grab the bird by the feet and allow it to hang upside down. Place its head above a large bucket. Locate the jugular vein and sever it. Allow the blood to drain into the bucket until it stops. You might have to move the head slightly to the side to drain the blood efficiently.
- Place a large pot of water onto an outdoor cooker and heat it to approximately 135 degrees. Dunk the bird in this large pot while holding its feet. Your goal is to make sure that all feathers are submerged in the hot water.
- Now the feathers should be easy to pluck. Hang the bird by its feet above the bucket. Pluck then all by moving your hand against the grain. Use a pinning knife to remove the “pins” that are left behind on the breasts. Rinse the bird once you have plucked away all feathers.
- You will find a preen gland on the rear of the chicken. You must remove this, or else it can ruin the meat. Use a sharp knife to cut just above the gland. Make sure the incision is all the way down to the bone. Now you can follow its backbone until you reach the tail, making an incision along its back.
- Cut the feet away from the chicken. Then remove the bird’s head. Cut the skin along the chicken’s back and pull it down. Feel for the crop. This should be empty.
- Now you will be able to pull the edible parts of the chicken away from the rest. Just be careful not to cut the intestines because that will get bacteria in the meat and ruin it. You can reach into the bird and pull on the gizzard. If you do this correctly, all intestines will follow as long as you have loosened the trachea, esophagus,
