One struggle that many chicken owners face is the inability to bring their beloved chicken into the house with them. Unless one likes having chicken feces all over the house, then they’re usually kept outside. However, thanks to chicken diapers, you might be able to finally bring your favorite chicken indoors with you.
What Are Chicken Diapers?
As its name might suggest, chicken diapers are exactly that. They’re diapers for your chicken. They’re made from a delicate material that rests lightly on your chicken. It doesn’t injure their feathers and is easy to put on and off them.
When the diaper is full, you simply remove it and place another one on the chicken. Thanks to the diaper, you can bring your chicken indoors. No longer will you have to worry about the chicken going to the bathroom in your newly cleaned home.
Taking Care of Your Chicken After Using Diapers
For those who have had babies, you understand that some care needs to be taken with the one wearing a diaper after it has been used. If left unchanged for too long, the chicken can develop rashes just like a baby would. It can be difficult to know when the diaper should be changed since chickens can sometimes use the bathroom a lot.
A good rule of thumb is to keep an eye on the amount of sag that the diaper has. If the diaper is sagging, then it’s time to change it. You can usually tell by the scent, too. If the odor of feces becomes too much, then you can be sure it’s time to change the diaper.
After removing the diaper, it’s a good idea to gently clean the feathers to ensure no waste rubbed into them while within the diaper. Because the feces typically drops straight down to the ground, this shouldn’t be a problem. However, to prevent rashes and other skin problems, cleaning your chicken’s feathers isn’t a terrible idea.
How to Put the Diaper on the Chicken
Depending on what brand of diaper you procure, the process of putting the diaper onto the chicken might be different. However, the overall general process should be similar to putting a diaper on a baby. You simply fit the chicken’s legs through the holes, then gently pull on the threads to tighten it around them.
Some come with a bow that you have to tie up in order to secure the diaper to the chicken. If the bow comes undone frequently, you can easily sew it tight. When it comes to removing the diaper, you can untie the bow and let it fall from the chicken. For those that sewed, you can just carefully cut the bow.
Additional Tips
To make the most of your diaper, you might want to follow these tips. When wearing a diaper, it requires a liner. You can sometimes purchase a diaper liner separately if the company doesn’t send you liners with the diapers. You can also use a paper towel as a liner.
It’s also a good idea to size your chicken before buying diapers. Just like babies, your chicken’s bottom and waist may not match with the diapers that you choose to buy for them. Before you buy the diaper, take out a fabric tape measure and determine the size of your chicken’s waist and length.
Because most diapers have elastic seams, you can typically customize the diaper and adjust it to fit your chicken regardless of its size. However, you don’t want to buy diapers that are meant for large chickens when your chicken is a tinier size
